Sweden History

Sweden is the most visited country of the Nordic countries with 5.2 million visitors in 2007.

The modern name Sweden is derived through back-formation from Old English Sweoeod, which meant people of the Swedes"". This word is derived from Sweon/Sweonas. The Swedish name Sverige literally means ""Realm of the Swedes"

excluding the Geats in Gtaland."""

Variations of the name Sweden is used in most languages, with the exception of Danish and Norwegian using Sverige and the more notable exception of some Finno-Ugric languages where Ruotsi and Rootsi are used, names commonly considered etymologically related to the English name for Russia, referring to the people, Rus', originally from the coastal areas of Uppland Roslagen.

The etymology of Swedes, and thus Sweden, is generally not agreed upon but suggestively deriving from Proto-Germanic Swihoniz meaning one's own"
